License Plate Cameras
License plate cameras are specially designed to be able to capture the license plate on a moving vehicle. Many standard cameras are not able to capture plates at night because of motion blur. License plate cameras are able to capture the reflective light off a license plate even in complete darkness. The have special lenses and special image sensors to capture the right amount of light and to filter out other light such as headlights from distorting the entire image.
License Plate Recognition (LPR/ANPR)
LPR (License Plate Recognition), also known at ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) systems use license plate cameras or other specialized ANPR cameras to capture the plate number, recognize it as text and save it in a database. The technology is very similar to text recognition in document scanning applications. LPR systems are mostly used by police and by parking facilities. Many LPR systems are capable of automatically checking the license plate against a database such as a crime database or parking payment database.
